I came across this point in Google Search Central’s documentation on managing URLs for Ecommerce websites:
______________________________________________________
Avoid indexing URLs with filters or alternative sort orders.
To prevent indexing variations of the same list of results, use the noindex meta tag or block crawling via robots.txt.
______________________________________________________
However, after reviewing top e-commerce sites, I rarely see this applied. Instead, it is more common to rely on canonical tags and leave filter URLs as is.
Has anyone tested the effect of the recommended approach, or is it something you actively consider/ignore?
Thanks in advance
